Reception Weekly Blog (24.5.24)

Ahoy, pirates! Celebrations all around. A wonderful end to a busy half-term.

On Monday, the children were sure of a big surprise to find teddy bears enjoying a summer picnic in Sand Dunes classroom, as well as discovering a swashbuckling adventure in Pinewoods Classroom.

Following one of our focus children’s interests, pirates, this week, we enjoyed listening to the wonderful story: ‘Never Mess With A Pirate Princess’ read by our resident pirate expert, Ms O’Neill. The children loved the story and were inspired to recreate their very own heroic tale using self-made treasure maps and telescopes to discover the hidden loot!

Reception also enjoyed creating their very own invitation this week, to invite a teddy bear to join them for a picnic at school. We started by drawing pictures of our favourite teddies from home, and then used our ‘Fred Fingers’ to pinch the sounds we needed for the words. It was fantastic to see so many children give independent writing a go. Well done, Reception!

Thursday meant it was time for our teddy bear picnic! Our little chefs were busy this week, following their own ingredient lists whilst whisking away, to bake enough mini sponge cakes for each child in Reception, The children thoroughly enjoyed a special treat, after dancing and singing the afternoon away before settling down to enjoy listening to the musical tale: ‘The Teddy Bears Picnic’.

In maths this week, we have introduced the concept of ‘more’ and ‘fewer’, comparing quantities and using a 1-10 number track. It is fun learning new mathematical terms such as ‘fewer’ and what they mean in detail. To help your child learn at home you could use words such as ‘more’, ‘fewer’ and ‘less than’ in discussion. Which has more/fewer? How do you know? The children are so eager to learn and are showing fantastic progress.

We hope you all have a fantastic and restful half-term break. We are looking forward to welcoming the children back on Wednesday 5th June, after two inset days on Monday and Tuesday.

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
