Reception Weekly Blog (27.9.24)

Hello Autumn…

We arrived at school on Monday to rain… and lots of it! That didn’t stop us, as we continued to learn about our world. The children submerged themselves into conversation about where they live, we located some of the special places we have in our local area including the beach and the squirrel reserve. We even found our school on a simple map and spoke more about where we live.

On Tuesday we looked more closely at the different places in which people live in, we spoke about flats, bungalows and houses, how they are all different but all special to the people who live there. The children spent time talking about the favourite thing about their house and what makes their house special. We were so impressed with their knowledge and how they took this into their play, lots of children spent time building houses in provision using Lego, magnet tiles and large construction blocks.

After speaking lots about where our houses are and where we live, we moved our focus to prepositions on Wednesday. The children have broadened their knowledge of ‘next to, between, in, under and on top of’, we used the story of ‘Rosie’s Walk’ as inspiration. As a team we played together to position one of our class teddy bears in many different areas. Towards the end of the week, we used ‘what the ladybird heard’ to learn more about directions. We spent some time retelling the story together, using the classroom as our pretend farm.

The sounds we have learned this week:

Whilst the children are learning to recall the single letter sounds above, they are also learning to hear the word when an adult segments it into sounds e.g. an adult could say ‘h-ea-d’ and the child will blend it together and say ‘head.

https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/ropgIjfR/OsP5PSig - spend some time over the weekend familiarising yourself with ‘Fred Games’.

If you haven’t yet purchased your ‘Reception Pack’ from School Spider, please do so and we will send home your pack of speed sounds as soon as possible. It is so important that you regularly practise with the speed sound flash cards.

This week, your child will have brought an A4 sheet of paper home, on which they will create a Christmas design, alongside this will be an order form for a range of products. The Christmas designs can be professionally printed and purchased on a range of products including Cards, Tags, Wrapping Paper and Gift Mugs. Send it back to school when you can but definitely by Thursday 3rd October.

We love sharing our ‘good news’ with the class and can’t wait to see what you have all been up to over the weekend, send any wow moments our way using the email address [email protected] – this week we would be interested in seeing any ‘autumn treasure’ you have found whilst being out and about.

Next week we will be learning about ‘The Little Red Hen’ and how bread is made from harvested wheat, we will look at the role of a farmer and the machinery used on farms, in preparation for The Harvest Festival.

We can’t wait for another lovely week, have a restful weekend everyone!

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
