The children returned after their half-term break feeling refreshed and ready to dive back into learning!
On Monday, the children were excited to share all of their holiday adventures. We also had the pleasure of meeting our new experts, Sophie and Oliver, who are joining us this term.
A big thank you to our experts this week, we loved learning with Sophie and Oliver. In Pinewoods classroom we had Sophie teaching the children all about her love of playing schools and Lego. Over in Sand Dunes classroom the focus moved to Oliver; the children have learnt so much about Aviation. The children love exploring different interests each week and we cannot wait to learn about more fascinating things next week.
The Reading Scrapbook has had some amazing contributions, we are passionate about encouraging children to read for pleasure, and the scrapbook is a great way for them to share their thoughts on their favourite books. Please help your child choose a book, write a review, and feel free to include a picture, the book’s cover, or a photo of you reading together. Let your creativity shine! Don’t forget to share what makes the book special to your child—whether it’s a family favourite, their very first book, or simply a funny story they love. Please complete just one page in the scrapbook and return it in the canvas bag, so we can pass it on to the next child.
This week, we also learned about dentists and the importance of taking care of our teeth. The children worked hard sorting foods and drinks based on their effect on our teeth. We were lucky to have Ellie and Aaron, two friendly dentists, visit us. They spent the afternoon sharing tips on keeping our teeth healthy and answered the children’s questions. Each child has their own toothbrush and toothpaste to bring home today.
We had a break from our secret storyteller this week as we were delighted to have a dentist visit. If you wanted to be a Secret Storyteller on a Friday, a fantastic choice of books too. We can’t wait to meet our next ‘Secret Storytellers’ on Friday. If this is something you/ your family members would be interested in please email us at [email protected]
In our math sessions this week, we introduced the number 9. The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring all its different parts, including recognizing it as 3 lots of 3. We've been working on seeing the number 9 in many different ways, such as grouping objects into 5 and 4, 3, 4 and 2, or 8 and 1. The children are getting quicker at identifying these groups whenever they see pictures of 9 objects.
On Wednesday, we created our very own number track game. Each child now has one in their reading folder to play with you at home. The game involves tossing a coin, with a 1 or 2 on each side. The children move a counter forward by 1 or 2 spaces each time, aiming to reach the end of the track!
In our reading and writing sessions, we continue to focus on reading speed sounds at speed, in the spring term we start to see children ‘Fred in their head’, where the child whispers the sounds before blending them together to say a word.
We are continuing to use ‘Fred talk, read the word’ when reading new green words: https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/484gBRnu/aFND3dI6 have a go at this new virtual classroom video, Josh is reading words using ‘Fred Talk’.
Please keep practising your Red Words, take a look at the following video where Rosie helps the children spot the tricky part of the word, using the phrase tricky letter!

Looking ahead, we’ll be celebrating St. David’s Day and Shrove Tuesday. We’re excited to learn more about these traditions and the significance behind them. Don’t forget, World Book Day is on Thursday next week! We look forward to seeing the children’s book character choices and celebrating our love of reading.
We hope you all have a wonderful and restful half term! We look forward to welcoming you back, refreshed and ready for the joys of Spring! Please continue to send us your good news (no matter how big, or small) we love to share it as a class and it is so pleasing to see your children stand at the front and talk about their news [email protected]
Have a wonderful weekend, and we’ll see you on Monday!
