Ice, Ice, Reception!!

We arrived on Monday ready to introduce our experts for this week. In Sand Dunes classroom we had Seth teaching us all about palaeontology, different polar habitats and he even showed us how to use his trusty binoculars and telescope. Over in Pinewoods classroom the focus moved to Felicity, inspired by her recent trip to Lapland, she became a ‘frozen’ expert and turned Pinewoods classroom into an ice kingdom. The children have loved exploring Felicity and Seth’s interests this week and we look forward to meeting our new experts next week.

After learning so much about ice and polar habitats, it was only right to explore the coldest and windiest place on earth, (not the ROLA) …Antarctica! The children immersed themselves in conversation when learning facts about Antarctica, we explored ice and the process of freezing. The children amazed us with their attitude towards learning, when we introduced one of the only animals that can survive in The South Pole… the Emperor Penguin!

Throughout the week, the children tried to rescue the penguins who had been trapped in the ice. They worked together as a team to think about the quickest way to release them. The children came up with ideas like smashing the ice, putting the ice in sunlight or taking the ice inside where it was warm. We moved like penguins in the ROLA, waddling, huddling and chirping. The children even had a go at sliding down the hill using their ‘flippers’ to make them go faster.

In our reading and writing sessions, we continue to focus on reading speed sounds at speed: https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/2MuyE7fz/Abgd2Atd

and reading CVC words independently: https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/5vdTRlT9/mNOnVNVT have a go at this new virtual classroom video, Maya is reading words using ‘Fred Talk’.

Please continue to use your speed sound cards to over-learn those sounds and special friends, it is also beneficial to practise reading green words as often as you can to speed up reading. If you have misplaced yours or have any questions please do not hesitate to email us.

In maths we have continued to learn about number 5, turning our attention to the order in which we see the numbers. We spent lots of time talking about the rules of counting; that it is easier to put things in a line when you count so you only count things once, the children are also mastering stopping at the ‘end’ number and continue to learn that’s the amount.

Thank you for sending your child to school with a warm coats, gloves and hats. Please try to name all belongings as lots of items are getting left or misplaced.

Next week, we are looking forward to a visit from Christine, who is a children’s author, she will be visiting St. Luke’s on Monday afternoon to read the children a story from her latest book, Mrs. Paws and the tumbledown fairies. The book is available to purchase through School Spider. It is £7, £2 of which goes directly to school.

Next week, we will begin learning about Advent, the period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas. As we think about the birth of Jesus, we will have a very special visit from a Mummy and her baby. We will read the Nativity story from our children’s Bible, and speak about how all babies change the world and life of people around them, as did Jesus.

Please continue to send us your good news (no matter how big, or small) we love to share it as a class and it is so pleasing to see your children stand at the front and talk about their news [email protected]

Have a wonderful weekend, see you in December!!

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
