Reception Weekly Blog (4.10.24)

What a wheat-tastic week!

On Monday, we introduced the children to the story of ‘The Little Red Hen’, they really enjoyed retelling the story together and reciting familiar parts, especially “not I, said the cat!” and “very well, I will do it myself!”. We used this story as inspiration throughout the week, to learn about how bread ends up on our plates as toast and on our trays at lunchtime. We learned that wheat is sown in fields to grow tall and strong and harvested in the autumn time, the children loved exploring all the different types of machinery found on farms and particularly enjoyed learning about the grain was separated from the stems of wheat and taken to a mill to be ground down to flour. We carefully watched as the sails on the mill turned the cogs inside the mill and created a soft, fluffy flour.

Once the children had seen how the flour was made, they became expert bakers and all had a go at making their very own bread roll. We learned how to mix the dough and knead the mix before leaving it to prove in a warm room. The children impressed us so much with the words they used to describe the bread making process and used their senses to explore the mixture before it became bread.

We couldn’t have planned it… but later on in the week we were treated to a tractor drive by! It was only right that we spent the afternoon talking about all the different parts of a tractor and how these amazing machines help us harvest lots of food items at once rather than someone picking them by hand.

On Friday we spent time talking about our upcoming walk to church and how we will celebrate The Harvest Festival as a school, we spoke about the features of a church and what we may see. On Monday. Please send your child into school with a waterproof coat on Monday morning, if you have a child in Year 3 we will make sure their younger sibling sees them in the correct service.

We love sharing our ‘good news’ with the class and can’t wait to see what you have all been up to recently, send any wow moments our way using the email address [email protected] – we would love you to find some lovely autumn leaves over the weekend and bring them into school as we prepare to use wax crayons for leaf rubbing.

Next week we will be learning more about the food we can harvest and discussing where they grow in our world. We will be talking about how we can be thankful for the food we eat, not just at Harvest time but all the time.

Enjoy your weekend!

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
