A fantastic start to February with our littlest of learners
What a wonderful start to February we’ve had! This week, we introduced our little ones to two very important themes: National Storytelling Week and Children’s Mental Health Week. It’s been a joy to see how engaged the children have been in these topics, learning about the power of stories and the importance of looking after their mental well-being.
On Tuesday, we learned about The Good Samaritan, a story told by Jesus that teaches the children how they can be a kind friend. How they can care for people by stopping and checking they are ok and lending a helping hand. We spoke about how we can do this whilst we are at school and out in the community.
On Wednesday, we ventured out for a walk in the woods to explore the adventure trail behind St. Luke’s Church. The children were absolutely in their element, getting their hands dirty and using their bodies to navigate through tunnels, stepping logs, and wooden slides. It was a very successful walk, with the children showing great responsibility and sensible walking skills. We were so impressed with their behaviour and enthusiasm—hopefully, everyone had a peaceful sleep on Wednesday night after such a fun day!
Friday was another highlight as we celebrated NSPCC’s Number Day. The children arrived in the most creative number-themed outfits, and we spent the day enjoying various math activities. It was such a fantastic way to make numbers come to life and reinforce their importance in everyday life. Take a look at our pictures below.
In our math sessions this week, we introduced the number 8. The children’s contributions were impressive, especially as we worked on recognizing the doubles within 10. The children are really starting to grasp the concept of doubles, and we are so proud of their progress. Over the weekend, why not ask your little one, "What doubles can you find?" and "What do you notice?" These simple questions can help further develop their understanding and spark curiosity.
A quick reminder: next week, we will be holding our Parent Workshop for the ‘Lifelong Learners Project.’ We’re excited to welcome you and share more about this fantastic initiative. If you need any further information, please don’t hesitate to email [email protected]
A big thank you to our experts this week, we loved learning with Ted and Darcie. In Pinewoods classroom we had Ted teaching the children all about his love of the outdoors, planes and ferries. Over in Sand Dunes classroom the focus moved to Darcie; the children have learnt so much about Australia. The children love exploring different interests each week and we cannot wait to learn about more fascinating things next week.
Next week, we’ll be shifting our focus to technology, with a focus on internet safety. We can’t wait to dive into this important topic and teach the children how to stay safe online.
We were delighted to meet our next Secret Storytellers on Friday, a fantastic choice of books too. We can’t wait to meet our next ‘Secret Storytellers’ on Friday. If this is something you/ your family members would be interested in please email us at [email protected]
In our reading and writing sessions, we continue to focus on reading speed sounds at speed, in the spring term we start to see children ‘Fred in their head’, where the child whispers the sounds before blending them together to say a word.
We are continuing to use ‘Fred talk, read the word’ when reading new green words: https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/31ljE3eG/192PVO6E
