A week full of learning and fun in Reception!

Happy Friday, everyone! It’s been a fantastic week, and we’re so excited to share the highlights with you. It definitely feels like spring is on its way, and we’ve been soaking up the sunshine every chance we get.

A big thank you to our experts this week, we loved learning with Alice and Violet. In Pinewoods classroom we had Alice teaching the children all about her love of baking. Over in Sand Dunes classroom the focus moved to Violet; the children have learnt so much about her love of Rainbows and visiting her family in Belfast. The children love exploring different interests each week and we cannot wait to learn about more fascinating things next week.

The Reading Scrapbook has had some amazing contributions, we are passionate about encouraging children to read for pleasure, and the scrapbook is a great way for them to share their thoughts on their favourite books. Please help your child choose a book, write a review, and feel free to include a picture, the book’s cover, or a photo of you reading together. Let your creativity shine! Don’t forget to share what makes the book special to your child—whether it’s a family favourite, their very first book, or simply a funny story they love. Please complete just one page in the scrapbook and return it in the canvas bag, so we can pass it on to the next child.

On Monday, we were welcomed to a beautiful display of daffodils. The children enjoyed learning about St. David’s Day and discovered why this festival is so important to the people of Wales. This sparked great discussions about being respectful of different cultures and showing sensitivity toward others’ traditions. It’s always a pleasure to see our little learners making these connections!

On Tuesday we learnt about Shrove Tuesday, the last day before Lent begins. The children learned that traditionally, people used up all their rich foods before fasting for the 40 days leading up to Easter. What better way to mark the occasion than by making pancakes? The children loved mixing the batter, flipping the pancakes, and choosing their favourite toppings. A big thank you to our two experts who went shopping for all the delicious toppings discussed by the class!

Wednesday was all about independent writing! The children practiced instruction writing and even wrote their own shopping lists. We were incredibly impressed with how they’re using their "Fred Fingers" to sound out words and spell independently. You may have seen a ‘Hold a Sentence’ activity in your child’s reading folder this week – we encourage you to give it a try at home. If you have any questions or would like a demonstration, don’t hesitate to speak to a member of the team!

World Book Day 2025 – A Day to Remember! Thursday was a day of fun and creativity as we celebrated World Book Day 2025. The children looked absolutely amazing in their costumes, and the effort put in by everyone was great. We had so much fun exploring the children’s favourite books and characters through a series of engaging activities. The day also included a special World Book Day assembly in the hall, followed by an afternoon of solving clues to guess popular stories. It was a fantastic celebration of the joy of reading!

Friday arrived in a flash, the children enjoyed rounding up the maths session with a doubles game today. We have been exploring numbers within 10, particularly those that can be divided into two equal groups. We discussed the concept of equal parts and how putting these parts together creates a double. Next week, we’re looking forward to learning all about the number 10!

As we look ahead to next week, we can’t wait to welcome our experts for British Science Week 2025! We’re also gearing up for our very first school trip on Wednesday, so please remember to choose your child’s lunch preference for the trip if you haven’t already.

In our reading and writing sessions, we continue to focus on reading speed sounds at speed, in the spring term we start to see children ‘Fred in their head’, where the child whispers the sounds before blending them together to say a word.

We are continuing to use ‘Fred talk, read the word’ when reading new green words: https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/9eD585HZ/deY3hkep have a go at this new virtual classroom video, Maya is reading words using ‘Fred Talk’.

Please keep practising your Red Words, take a look at the following video where Rosie helps the children spot the tricky part of the word, using the phrase tricky letter!

Please continue to send us your good news (no matter how big, or small) we love to share it as a class and it is so pleasing to see your children stand at the front and talk about their news [email protected]

We hope you have a wonderful weekend, and we can’t wait to see what next week holds!

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
