Welcome back! We hope you all had a relaxing half-term break and enjoyed the sunshine and summery weather. We are all excited to be back in school for the final term before the summer break. We have only had a few days back in school this week, and it was lovely to see all of the children back in school.
In Maths, the children have been investigating time; the children have shared what they already knew about time, and started to learn how to read the time from an analogue clock. The children have all impressed us with their knowledge - so keep on practising at home! We have also revised how many seconds in a minute, minutes in an hour, hours in a day, and days in a week, month and year.
This week, the children have started their new topic which is based around science and called ‘Walk on the Wildside’. We will be investigating the world around us, and in particular focusing on different habitats and environments. To get them started thinking about the topic, the children went outside for a bug hunt; first they made their predictions, thinking which area of the school’s outside areas would most likely be the best place to find lots of insects and bugs: the playground, the field, or the garden. The children then went out and enjoyed exploring the different areas in the sunshine looking for signs of life.
The children have also spent some time outside in the garden, tending to the vegetables and fruit that were fruited before the break. When Mrs Groom returned to school on Wednesday morning, she saw that, over the holiday, lots of weeds had grown in the raised beds, so they were in desperate need of weeding. Unfortunately, some of vegetables were a bit battered by the sun and wind over the break, but the strawberries and lettuce plants are both growing really nicely. Fingers crossed by the end of term the children will be able to see the fruits of their labour!
On Thursday, the children used the Chromebooks in the afternoon to further develop their understanding of computer systems and in particular learning all about algorithms, and how to create their own using Purple Mash. The children are getting faster and faster with their typing skills, and more and more proficient navigating the Chromebook Operating System to execute different tasks - skills that they will be using throughout the rest of their time at school.
Through the week the children have also completed some lovely pieces of writing; first they wrote about their holiday news, and on Thursday and Friday they thought about poetry, writing a poem independently all about summer. The children wrote some beautiful descriptions of all the things that we feel, smell, taste and see during the summer months. Waves crashing. Seagulls squaking. Children cheerfully playing. And the smoky smells of a distant BBQs!
We have lots of exciting things planned for the rest of this term in Year 2 - we are all eager to make the most of the time we have left before the end of the school year!
Enjoy your weekend and see you on Monday!
