Welcome back! How are we already 8 days into the new term? Time certainly flies when you are having fun. The children have returned to school full of excitement and plenty of tales to tell of their Christmas and New Year adventures. Oh, the kudos of staying up to see in the New Year was a badge of honour for some.
The children have eagerly thrown themselves into our new topic for this half term, ‘Healthy Humans’. We have been looking at the role of the skeleton and our muscles in keeping up upright, protected and healthy. We began our topic by creating our very own body mind map by drawing round our friends then adding in any information that we already knew about the human body. Please see the photos below. Drawing bodies inevitably led to certain body parts being discussed with a lot of giggling. This week we have begun our NSPCC ‘Pants’ work which reinforces with the children the correct medical and scientific terms for the private parts of their bodies. This is an essential set of lessons that teaches children how to keep themselves safe. We regularly reinforce "The underwear rule" throughout school, using the acronym PANTS, which is that: Privates are private. Always remember your body belongs to you. No means no. Talk about secrets that upset you. Speak up, someone can help. Here is the link to the information for the Parents page including the ever so catchy Pantosaurus song.

Talking about songs, ‘Space Oddity’ by David Bowie has been the focus of our music lessons. We are learning all about ballads – a song that tells a story and have created a storyboard depicting the different phrases of the classic tune. The children have really enjoyed learning to sing the song as well. We are hoping to add actions and some instrumental accompaniment to our performance in the coming weeks. The link below will take you to the video the children have been watching to become familiar with the story and the tune. Maybe ask your child to perform the lines they can remember.
Here’s to a happy half term!
