Did you know that once, 335 million years ago, all of the land on Earth was one huge piece, a supercontinent called Pangaea. Well this has blown the children’s minds this week and has led to lots of discussions about tectonic plates, fault lines and volcanoes. The children have been coming up with a variety of questions that they would like to find out the answers to about geological time (rock time) These questions and any subsequent research will form the basis of a ‘Rock and Roll’ fact sheet that the children will be designing next week. Maybe, as homework, the children would like to focus on a specific element of our ever-changing rocky planet. They are then welcome to bring in any facts, illustrations, photos or objects they have gathered to add to their information sheet.
We have continued our journey through time by spending this week in the Bronze Age. Smelting has become a hot topic of conversation - no pun intended! The children were fascinated by the intricate processes that were involved in mining for tin and copper, melting it together then inventing moulds to form the basic shape of all manner of new inventions. After all, why brush your hair with an animal bone when you can have a bronze hairbrush.
On Wednesday we enjoyed a celebration of thinking outside the box for World Maths Day. We set off on a scavenger hunt around the school grounds. Can you think of an object from nature with a very geometrical shape? Or a thing whose shape is made of flat surfaces and hard edges, with no curves? Not as easy as it sounds is it? I wonder if the children can spot any more things around the house or make up their own scavenger hunt for the family to follow.
Let’s hope that the sun shines all weekend again. One more week until Easter…
As always, thank you for your continuing support. We really appreciate it!
