We’ve had such a lot of fun this week, with World Book Day being a real highlight of the year. It was great to see such an array of costumes and such a love of books, although it did feel like we’d stepped out of St Luke’s and into Crunchem Hall! Miss Murdock and Mrs Roberts brought the fearsome school from Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda’ to life as the formidable Miss Trunchbull and the adorable Miss Honey: everyone joined in the excitement but luckily no one was slung over the fence by their plaits!
It was lovely to see so many children come back for the evening session when we enjoyed milk and cookies while listening to our favourite stories, and we even had a special visit from one of our much-loved ex-teachers Mrs Down and her dog Stanley, AKA Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy! Have a look at the St Luke’s Twitter feed to see pictures of our friends from across school joining in, from Reception to Year 6. After all of the excitement of the day it was great to settle down and get ready for home and bed. Big thanks to FOSLS and everyone in school for such a special day.
In English lessons we’ve continued our focus on Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man, searching for the indentation that marks the start of a new paragraph and remembering the 3 Ts – topic, time and talk – to know when a new one is needed. Listen to this little song to help you remember how to structure a paragraph: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhOJZwLG8C4
We continued our new RE unit about Celebrations by looking at special festivals and celebrations from across the world and across faiths. The children had lots of questions and generated some wonderful ideas for a celebration they might plan, with love and inclusion being central themes discussed in all of the work groups across Year 3. We are lucky to work with such kind and caring children.
In music we composed a rag, a key component of traditional Indian music. The children joined in with enthusiasm and imagination – so much so they could be heard in the playground!
We’ve been exploring volume in maths – as you can imagine the children loved pouring different quantities into and between different containers, reading scales and talking about how the quantity was the same regardless of the diameter of the vessel. Luckily the activities were outside so spillages didn’t matter…
Please remember there’s a new homework grid available this with lots of lovely activities to share. As ever, please encourage your child to access the TT Rockstars programme daily at home; it only needs to be for 10 minutes but it makes such an enormous difference. Choose the Jamming mode and select the times tables that your child is comfortable with to begin with then add in the 3, 4, 8 x tables. These catchy songs will also help embed learning:

And finally, please remember to book your Parents’ Evening appointment on School Spider. We look forward to seeing you and sharing your children’s work.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
