Happy New Year, everyone!

Welcome to a new Spring Term! It’s been wonderful to welcome the children back to school this week, full of energy and excitement for the term ahead. We have loved catching up and hearing all about their amazing news. Although the weather isn’t feeling very “spring-like” just yet, which meant our trip to the Eureka Science Museum sadly had to be postponed on Thursday. The children took the news brilliantly, showing resilience and kindness by comforting each other. We are all very pleased that the trip has been rearranged for Thursday 16th January

We made the most of our unexpected time at school by celebrating a fantastic achievement: Year 3’s success in earning 30 golden tickets throughout the Autumn Term! The children enjoyed a special afternoon in the hall, playing with friends, learning the rules of new games, and ending the day with a film and hot chocolate. It turned out to be a brilliant day!

Here is an overview of what we will be learning this Spring term in Year 3:

We introduced our new focus story in English this week: The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers. On Tuesday, the children arrived in class to find some of our books had big chunks taken out of them! There were gasps of shock and lots of imaginative ideas about who or what could have done it. The mystery was solved with much laughter when they discovered it was, in fact, an incredible book-eating boy!

This term, we’ll be diving into this brilliant text, exploring its creative grammar, playful language, and engaging layout. The children will also work towards creating their own imaginative stories inspired by the book. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!

In Maths, we are focusing on multiplying by a 2-digit number. We begin by breaking down the two-digit number into two parts – the tens and the ones – before multiplying each part by the other number. Finally, we add the products together to find the answer. The children will have plenty of opportunities to practise this method but help at home is invaluable, so practising breaking numbers into tens and ones or solving simple multiplication problems together would be a great support for your child’s learning.

In Science this term, we will be learning about the importance of nutrition and how animals, including humans, need the right types and amounts of food to stay healthy. We will also investigate how humans and some animals have skeletons and muscles for support and protection. The children will group animals based on their diets, comparing and contrasting how different diets help them to thrive.

In RE this term, we will be exploring why prayer is important to people of faith. The children will learn about the different ways prayer is practiced across various religions and the significance it holds in the lives of those who follow these faiths.

In Art this term, we will be inspired by author and artist Lauren Child, best known for her children's storybooks Charlie and Lola, which has also become an animation. The children will explore how to create simple moving drawings by making paper puppets and animating them using technology.

In PE this term, we will be focusing on hockey outdoors and dodgeball indoors. The children will develop their skills in both sports, learning the rules, techniques, and strategies needed for each game.

Homework

The Spring Term Home Learning Grid has been uploaded to the Home Learning Tab on the Year 3 class page on our school website. A paper copy will be sent home with your child on Monday. Please take some time to work with your child on the tasks, along with daily reading and their weekly Doodle Maths activities. We love to celebrate your child’s learning at home, so please do encourage them to bring in what they have completed. They will receive a stamp in their achievement album, and have their work displayed on our classroom walls!

Thank you for your continued support.

The Year 3 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
