A week full of Autumnal wonders

This week we have continued learning all about the significance of Harvest as a celebration of thankfulness. We discussed the joys of Autumn which we are thankful for, and wrote prayers to express our gratitude. It was wonderful to hear the children articulate their thoughts and feelings in meaningful ways.

Continuing with our creative flair, we encouraged the children to immerse themselves in the autumn environment, using their five senses – sight, sound, smell, touch and taste – to create descriptive poems about the season. From the crunch of golden leaves to the smell of pumpkin pie, the children truly showcased their growing language and poetic writing skills.

In addition to capturing the beauty of Autumn through writing, we have used our observational skills to sketch the intricate details of autumn leaves during our Art lessons this week. The children used magnifying glasses to closely examine the texture and shape of various leaves and took their time to create unique artwork with brilliant attention to detail.

In Maths, we are building upon our understanding of the place value of each digit in a 3-digit number. For example, in the number 346, we learned that 3 represents 300 or three hundreds, 4 represents 40 or four tens and 6 represents 6 or six ones. We have also been practicing counting in multiples of 50 – the ’50 times table’! We had lots of fun rolling a dice to see how many multiples of 50 we needed to make. We took turns until the first to reach 1000 was the winner!

At the end of last week, Year 3 began our very first science experiment: exploring seed germination. We each sprinkled sunflower and cress seeds onto wet paper towels in two shallow trays. To create different conditions, we covered one tray with cling film while leaving the other tray uncovered. At the start of every day this week, the children have closely monitored the growth of the seeds, and the results have been fascinating! The children were amazed to see how quickly the seeds which were covered with cling film began to grow and change. Ask your child if they can describe the differences between the seeds in the two trays. They were truly amazed! We look forward to lots more hands-on experiments throughout the rest of the year.

It was wonderful to see those who were able to attend our Welcome Meeting on Wednesday evening. To those who were unable to make it, you will find an information leaflet in your child’s bookbag. In addition, there is an electronic version uploaded onto our Year 3 class page on the school website, along with our Year 3 end of year expectations in English and Maths.

Home learning is set on Doodle every Friday, to be submitted before the following Wednesday. Inside your child’s bookbag you will find an Autumn Term 1 Home Learning Grid, detailing our 4 topic tasks per half term, along with a range of non-negotiables, that can be completed during the half term when it suits you as a family. You will also find your child’s new Reading Record. Passwords for Doodle and TT Rockstar logins have been glued in to the reading record.

If you require any support at all with home learning, please don’t hesitate to ask. Have a wonderful weekend everybody.

The Year Three Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
