Year 3 Weekly Blog 20.9.24

Date: 20th Sep 2024 @ 5:06pm

A busy week of planting bulbs, exploring germination, and diving into our new English text!

On Monday, Year 3 rolled up our sleeves and got our hands dirty as we immersed ourselves into our new English text: The Gardener by Sarah Stewart. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of a young girl who goes to stay with her uncle in the big city, where, through her love of growing plants, she transforms a dreary city landscape into a vibrant, blooming paradise. The story is told through heartfelt letters written home, and this week, the children have all worked hard to craft their own letters written in the voice of the main character. Each letter captures themes of love, hard work and the joy of gardening, reflecting a fantastic grasp of the storyline!

The children were absolutely delighted when a mysterious suitcase arrived in our classrooms, filled with a watering can, a gardening book, children’s clothes and an envelope brimming with bulbs! We were all inspired to each plant our own bulb, which we are tenderly nurturing at school. The children can’t wait to see them grow and flourish!

We also continued our exploration of germination in science this week. Each child created a detailed concertina booklet that illustrates the six stages of germination, from the moment a seed is planted to the emergence of leaves. It was wonderful to see the children’s creativity shining through as they shared their booklets with one another.

In Maths this week we have spent time consolidating our knowledge of numbers to 1000 by adding ‘100 more’ and subtracting ’10 less’ to find a 3-digit number. We have also begun to explore the concept of the commutative law of addition to form a “family” of addition and subtraction facts. We look forward to building upon this concept more during our maths lessons next week!

The children have also enthusiastically been busy practicing their hymns for our upcoming Harvest Church Service on Monday 7th October. To support your child in mastering the lyrics, we encourage you to play the following YouTube videos at home whenever you have some time. This will help reinforce what they’re learning in class, thank you for your continued support:

Home Learning

This week’s online home learning has been set on Doodle, entitled ‘Find 100 more or less than a given number’. Please ensure your child completes their Doodle assignment before the end of Wednesday next week. We offer a Doodle club on a Tuesday lunchtime, if your child would prefer to complete their assignments in school. There is no need to book into the club, the children can just turn up as needed.

There is also a ‘Doodle Baseline’ activity which has been assigned to all Year 3 children. Lots of children have been busy bees completing these already. If your child is yet to start – please encourage them to access their Doodle assignments as independently as possible. That way, we can see if there are any gaps in knowledge which we can support at school.

Have a wonderfully sunny weekend everybody.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
