A Stone Age Adventure in Year Three

On Monday, we had a special visit from The Wildlife Trust team at Lunt Meadows. They taught us all about the three eras of the Stone Age. We loved ordering a timeline, trying out soap knapping, and creating cave paintings. We even got to handle real artefacts! This inspired our history task of exploring how Britain changed in pre-history. The children were amazed to learn that pre-history means the time before humans could write! We’re now beginning to discuss how people lived during the Stone Age, including what their houses, food, and tools looked like.

Our writing skills are improving every day! Each child has finished their "chunks" of a story about meeting a Stone Age character. The stories are full of excitement and detail, showing how much we’ve learned about storytelling in Year 3. Next week, we will begin editing our stories before completing our final pieces. We are so proud of their hard work — wait until you read them!

The children are enjoying their weekly singing sessions with Finlay Gordon. We are working hard to memorise the words to our festive songs. Everyone is excited to sing in front of the whole school during a very special school assembly in December.

In PE, we’ve been practising mindfulness in our yoga sessions. This week, we learned a sun salutation sequence. We even tried giving gentle massages to our friends — everyone left feeling super calm and relaxed!

In Maths, we’re becoming experts in our 4 and 8 times tables. This week, the children learned a catchy 8 times table song. Ask them to sing it to you at home!

Lastly, this week in Science, we became archaeologists! The children explored real fossils and learned how they are made. We also discovered the inspiring story of Mary Anning, who found her first fossil at the age of 12. The children were thrilled to learn that they too could find a fossil if they go searching on a beach!

Next week - we are so excited to welcome one of our wonderful parents on Wednesday for a special art afternoon. The children will be learning how to make a Stone Age-inspired flip book. We can’t wait to get creative and see their fantastic designs!

Have a wonderful weekend, everybody.

The Year 3 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
