Year 3 Weekly Blog 6.12.24

Date: 6th Dec 2024 @ 6:13pm

It’s been another wonderful and busy week in Year 3, with lots of exciting activities to share.

In Design and Technology, we’ve been learning all about appliqué! The children discovered that appliqué is a technique where smaller pieces of fabric are sewn onto a larger fabric base to create decorative designs. With Christmas just around the corner, the children have been putting their sewing skills—built up since Reception and through Years 1 and 2—to excellent use.

Each child designed a festive cushion, incorporating their own creative flair. From Christmas trees to hot chocolates, their designs were beautiful and unique. Watching them carefully sew their fabric pieces together and seeing the pride on their faces as their cushions took shape was such a highlight.

This week in PE, we continued with our outdoor rugby practice and explored key rules like "knock-ons" and "forward passes". It’s fantastic to see their confidence grow each session, both in their understanding of the game and their physical abilities.

Tuesday’s musical performance was a tremendous success! The children sang with such enthusiasm that it lit up the room. Finlay Gordon and the team from the Anglican Cathedral were blown away by the children's efforts. It’s always a joy to see the children's confidence shine through music.

In RE this week, we began our Christmas unit by thinking deeply about the big question: How does the presence of Jesus impact people’s lives?
We explored how the arrival of a newborn changes the lives of those around them. They shared thoughtful insights, imagining how Mary and Joseph might have felt about welcoming baby Jesus. We even connected these big ideas to our own lives and experiences!

Next week, we look forward to our Santa Dash on Monday. Children are to come to school on Monday wearing mufti, festive headwear if you have it, and suitable trainers for running outdoors!

Following on from our learning about rock types this term in Science, we will begin to explore the different layers of the Earth and look closely at how mountains are formed. We will also be investigating different soil types and understanding their unique properties.

Homework
Thank you to those who have already sent in work from your child’s home learning grid. Two new assignments have been set on Doodle Maths. Please remind your child that ‘the product of’ two numbers means multiplying them—just as we’ve practiced in class!

Have a lovely weekend!
The Year 3 Team 🎄

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
