Year 3 Weekly Blog 7.3.25

Date: 7th Mar 2025 @ 1:09pm

The sun is shining, Spring flowers are blooming, and Year 3 has been making the most of the beautiful weather, enjoying plenty of outdoor fun with friends. We’ve had a fantastic start to the term and the children are as enthusiastic as ever as we begin our new topic - Fantastic Forces!

In English, we’ve been inspired by the fantastic story My Strong Mind by Neils Van Hove, helping us to explore mental strength and resilience. We have been writing our own instructional texts to help others become more resilient and find their inner strength. We even practiced mindfulness by making origami paper boats and watched our little boats rise and fall on our bellies as we practiced mindful breathing. A lovely, calming way to strengthen our minds!

In DT, following our creation of moving puppets last term, we’ve been expanding our knowledge of moving toys by exploring pneumatic systems! We’ve discovered that air has power and have been designing fun, air-powered toys using balloons, straws, and cardboard. They look fantastic!

As Easter approaches, we’ve been learning about the Christian Holy Week, including Palm Sunday and Jesus’ actions in the Temple. We enjoyed lots of fantastic whole-class discussions about the importance of standing up for what is right.

In Maths, we’ve been busy working on fractions—counting in halves, thirds, quarters and tenths, whilst even finding fractions of whole numbers. Soon, we will be adding and subtracting fractions! To support your child’s learning at home, we recommend the BBC Bitesize Introduction to Fractions videos and activities:

It was lovely to see those who were able to attend Parents’ Evening over the past two weeks. Please continue to encourage your child to complete their weekly Doodle assignments, set every Friday. Additionally, practicing Year 2 and 3 common exception spellings, along with the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Here are some times table songs to play at home, to help your child hear the pattern:

What a fantastic World Book Day we had! The children looked amazing in their costumes, and we had a brilliant assembly led by our wonderful SASWT team. We thoroughly enjoyed an exciting Guess the Character quiz — huge congratulations to 3R for guessing 19 out of 20 correctly and winning an extended playtime! We also loved our relaxing book share, where we chatted about our favourite stories, and were treated to a special visit from Secret Storytellers Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Page!

Next week, we’ll continue building our resilience in English, deepening our understanding of fractions, and begin preparing for a special whole-school performance with Mr. Gordon.

Have a fantastic weekend, everybody.

The Year 3 Team 😊

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
