Welcome to Autumn Term 2!

We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable half-term break. Our PE days remain the same this term, with outdoor games on Monday and indoor PE on Thursday. We’re also thrilled to continue our Music lessons with Mr. Finlay Gordon from the Liverpool Anglican Choir on Tuesday afternoons. His expertise brings a wonderful energy to our music sessions, and the children are learning so much about rhythm, melody, and performance.

This week, we’ve started exploring our new topic, The Stone Age. Together, we’re learning about the Neolithic and Mesolithic periods, with the help of our new class text, The Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura. The children have been fascinated to discover what life was like in prehistoric times, including the surprising fact that ancient footprints from the Stone Age still exist today!

In History, we’ve begun placing the Stone Age on a timeline, alongside the Bronze Age and Iron Age. It’s incredible to imagine just how long ago these eras were and how traces of them remain around us even now.

In Maths, we’ve started using bar modelling to explore addition and subtraction. Building on their Year 2 experience, we’ll use this visual method to help children confidently break down and solve more complex problems.

For PE, we’re focusing on Tag Rugby outdoors and yoga indoors. The children have enjoyed learning to handle the rugby ball, practising “pop passing” and retrieval. In yoga, they’ve embraced mindfulness, mastering poses like the “tree” and “happy baby.” Ask them to show you their favourites at home!

In RE, we’ve been exploring why the Bible is so important to Christian people. The children have discussed how the Bible helps many people make sense of life, providing guidance on what matters most. They’ve been thoughtful in their discussions, sharing insights about how stories can hold meaning and offer support.

In Art, the children have been putting the final touches on their own cave paintings! Using earthy-toned pastels, they’ve created their interpretations of ancient cave art, inspired by the textures and colours of the Stone Age. The results are fantastic, and it’s been wonderful to see their creativity in bringing history to life through art.

In Science, we became “rock detectives” using chocolate to explore the three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The children loved examining the textures and properties of different chocolate bars, first grouping them based on their own observations. After learning about each type of rock, they regrouped the chocolates to reflect their new understanding. It was a fun, hands-on, (delicious) way to deepen their knowledge!

To end another fantastic week, the children had an absolute blast “rocking out” with the Rock Kidz! It was a day filled with music, movement, and lots of fun. Alongside learning all about resilience, exploring how to stay positive and keep going, even when things get tough.

Looking ahead we’re excited about our upcoming trip to Southport Vue cinema on Thursday 14th November! Children are to come into school wearing their PE kit as usual. We leave school at approx 9:15am and will be back in time for lunch. This will be a great experience for the children, and we can’t wait to enjoy it together as a class. If you haven't paid already, please can you send your payment to school via the School Spider app. Children may bring a treat to enjoy whilst watching the film: a small bag of popcorn or jelly type sweets are ideal. Please ensure there are no nuts present in any food item. Thank you.

Year 3 will also be spending an exciting day at the Eureka! Science Museum in Wirral on Thursday, 9th January. Further details on payment for this trip will follow soon.

Home Learning for Autumn 2:

  • Your child has brought home our new Autumn 2 Home Learning Grid today, to be completed before the end of term. A PDF version is also available under the Home Learning tab on the Year 3 class webpage.
  • Two weekly tasks have been set on DoodleMaths to reinforce what we’ve been learning in class.

We’re looking forward to sharing more about our learning as the term unfolds. Thank you for your continued support.

Have a wonderful weekend, everybody.

The Year 3 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
