Year 3 weekly blog

Date: 10th Mar 2023 @ 4:10pm

10.03.2023

It’s been an incredibly exciting week, with the snow and Year 3 making movies!

We’re told that today is ‘the best day ever’ – there’s something about being able to build snowmen with your school friends that’s incredibly precious to primary-school-aged children, and we’ve certainly made some memories today.  Please have a look at our blog photos to see the fun we had on the school field early this morning.

Our blog photos also show us busy getting ready for our movie-making in Computing; using the iPads and our own props and sound effects we’re planning to create short films about The Iron Man.  The children have loved working together to plan and create props and certainly made use of the musical instruments when they came into class!

We’ve now completed our length, weight and capacity work in maths and will move on to fractions next week.  It may be a great excuse to have pizza for tea one night and ask your child to cut it into half, quarter, eights, etc!  Any real-life application will help embed your child’s understanding – can they divide numbers of Lego blocks, pasta shapes or small toys in half, quarter, etc?  Please reinforce that the groups should be equal.

Here’s a couple of little songs to embed the concept of fractions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d96clBxPP0I  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWCAnRMZyKo

In English we will continue with our Iron Man topic, using the grammar skills we have learned to write a recount.  Can your child tell you the story?  Can they remember what’s first, next and last?  Which is their favourite bit?

Please continue to read daily with your child; with so many new books in school there’s an incredible choice and we want to children to be able to access as many as possible.  Remember the shared-reading model is really effective – you read a page, they read a page – and a lovely way to share a book.  For our more fluent readers the focus will be on comprehension: can your child tell you what they have just read?  Can they find information in a text and tell you how they know they’re correct?  Can they predict what will happen next?

Times tables remain a priority as they underpin much of our number work.  Please continue to practise with your child, either through fun games you play verbally or using TT Rockstars.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

The Year Three Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
