Year 5 Blog 11.10.24

Date: 11th Oct 2024 @ 5:17pm

Welcome to our Year 5 Blog.

In English, we are nearly at the end of our instructional writing sentence stacking sessions and next week the children will be planning and writing their own set of instructions for a more modern game of Pok-a-Tok, using a range of our writing rainbow criteria.

In guided reading, the children read a Maya myth – The Hero Twins and learnt that they were two of the most significant characters in Maya mythology. Maybe they could tell you more about them.

In maths, the children used ‘more than’ less than’ the difference between’ when comparing two numbers. They then completed their addition and subtraction review before beginning their new unit (multiplication and division), which began with learning about multiples and factors.

24 is a multiple of 1,2,3,4,6,8,12 and 24. These numbers are all factors of 24.

In computing, we continued our unit on ‘systems and searching’ and the children designed their own school web page. From this we discussed how search engines rank websites based on how many times a search word/phrase appears. We recapped how web crawlers create an index which allow search engines to locate relevant websites.

In PE, the children worked in pairs and transferred a stanza from a ‘British Values’ poem into 16-24 count movement, focussing on mirroring, pathway and level. They then had the opportunity to share their finished pieces to the class.

In games, it was very wet and only one class had the opportunity to go outside for some fitness work and shooting practice. The other worked on fitness in the classroom as well as practising their speed stacking skills.

In Latin, the children used all their knowledge from unit 4 to complete their end of unit assessment. We then looked at the knowledge organiser for our new topic – translating Latin sentences into English and vice versa. We know they are up for this challenge.

During RE, the children focussed on forgiveness and role played a range of scenarios to see how forgiveness is a quality that Jesus wanted his followers to adopt in their own lives.

On Monday, we met up with our buddies from Year 1 and walked to church together for our Y3 led Harvest service. This afternoon (Friday), we met up with our buddies once more and went on a walk around the school grounds spotting signs of Autumn. The children were excited to get together with their buddies and really looked after them. Some of them now have new buddies and are getting to know each other. We are all looking forward to meeting up more regularly and sharing what we are getting up to at school.

All of the children who took part in Arts Stars were absolutely fabulous and did themselves proud! Well done team Y5 and good luck to those that have made it into the final audition on Monday when the judges will be from Range High School.

Congratulations to our Superstar certificate recipients: Henry (5H) and Izzy (5W)

Also, congratulations to our Summer Reading Challengers who were presented with their certificates. Keep reading for fun everyone.

Furthermore, a huge well done to all our Y5 cross country runners who braved the cool and windy conditions at Merchant Taylors’ playing fields on Wednesday.

Finally, Cian (5W) Isaac, Evan and Grace (5H) performed valiantly at the North Sefton Hockey tournament held earlier today (Friday) at Formby Hockey Club. The team reached the finals and should feel proud of their silver medals.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend everyone. Will the sun shine???  The Year 5 Team. J

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
