Year 5 Blog 12th May 2023
Date: 12th May 2023 @ 3:32pm
We have had another short week but once again packed lots of learning into the four days.
Our local history topic is gathering pace and we had another walk out around the local area. This time, we met Rev. Matt at St Luke’s church where we examined the gravestones to collect data which could help us with our historic enquiry skills looking at when and why the population of Formby began to grow. We also located the God Stone, which dates back to the Viking period (over 1000 years ago). Why not visit church and take a look at it? Whilst out at church, Rev Matt informed us that there had been sightings of the red squirrels so we went to investigate. We found evidence of them being in the area as there were stripped pinecones scattered on the ground. During our time in the forest, we split into teams and made our own squirrel dreys.
Keeping on our topic theme, in small groups, we examined sources of evidence (newspaper cuttings, letters and photos) from the past to help us to build up a picture of how the railway (and the train station) developed over time.
Finally, we completed our research sessions collating notes using a variety of sources ready to create our non-chronological on the Red Squirrels next week.
We are out and about in the village next week conducting pedestrian/traffic surveys and questionnaires, so if you see us, then give us a wave.
Enjoy your weekend and stay safe.
