Year 5 Blog 18.10.24

Date: 18th Oct 2024 @ 5:46pm

Welcome to our Year 5 Blog.

Yesterday (Thursday) we celebrated St Luke’s day by visiting Church will our buddies. Luckily the rain from the previous day had eventually stopped and the sun even made an appearance.

In English, the children planned, wrote and edited their own set of instructions for a more modern game of Pok-a-Tok, using a selection of the writing rainbow features including: relative clauses, modal verbs, colons and bullet points. We are really pleased with their final pieces.

In guided reading, the children learnt more about Maya daily life. They were less than impressed to hear that girls learned how to weave and cook, whilst the boys learnt farming and hunting skills!

In maths, the children were introduced to prime numbers (2,3,7,11,13,17,19 etc) and composite numbers (all non-prime numbers). They also learnt why square and cubed numbers were given this name. Maybe your child could let you know why 27 is a cubed number and what the symbol is for cubed.

In computing, we continued our unit on ‘systems and searching’. The children were put into the position of a web searcher, a search engine employee or a webpage creator. They then had to answer a number of questions (by using technology) to help them understand the different roles and difficulties they would face.

In PE, the children worked in larger groups of 5,6 or 7 in a session called chance choreography whereby the children rolled a dice to decide what actions they had to include in their motif. Once they had worked on this, they then rolled the dice again to decide how the motif would be organised, including which formation they would need to include. The children loved this activity and were keen to impress. This will be continued next week.

For outdoor games, we were presented with yet another really wet day. The children focussed on fitness and cardiovascular exercise, including some skipping when the rain eased off.

In Latin, the children worked extremely hard whilst translating Latin sentences into English. They needed to utilise all the skills learnt in unit 4 to work the sentences.

During RE, our whole school assembly was about being able to say sorry for the things we do, and to be able to forgive others when they have done wrong to us.

Congratulations to our Superstar certificate recipients: Sarah (5H) and Imogen (5W).

A further congratulations to the children from Y5 who made it through to Arts Star grand final at Range High School which takes place after half term.

Congratulations to Imogen and Flossi for being part of the St Luke’s girls’ football team who played today (Friday) in a large tournament organised by Formby Community Football Club.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend everyone. Let’s hope for drier weather. The Year 5 Team. J

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
