What a lovey warm and sunny week we’ve had.

In English we continued our ‘write stuff’ writing topic looking at rhyming poetry and the children are now ready to plan and write their own animal poems next week. This time instead of annoying animals, the theme will be cute animals.

During PSHE, the class council candidates had the opportunity to present to their peers before the red ballot box made its way around the classrooms. The children who took part had certainly worked hard with their speeches and we were extremely proud of them.

In guided reading we again extended our Maya knowledge and learnt all about Maya sacrifice.

In maths, the children have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10000 and 100000 and had a one-off lesson on Maya ‘code breaking’ maths. The Maya’s were one of the first civilisations to use a 0 as a place holder and used the base 20 system, unlike our base 10.

In computing, we continued our unit on ‘systems and searching’ and learnt about how the puffin crossing system worked looking at those using sensors those that are timed. The next time you are out and about, take a look at the traffic lights to see which ones have the sensors attached to them.

In PE, we finally put together the actions for the five British values to create our class motif. The difficult task is timing it with the James Bond theme!

In games, the children worked hard with their offensive skills when travelling past an opponent. There were lots of great skills on show during this lesson. They were also great improvements on moving into space to receive the ball when supporting their team.

The highlight of the week has to be the visit of ‘Big Nose’ the Maya warrior!

We were wowed by his in-depth knowledge of everything Maya and his delivery was extremely humorous, which had the children captivated. They learnt about the creation story; the language; took part in a drama workshop and learnt about the past by taking part in a Maya artefact session, which involved handling Maya artefacts.

In Latin we have recapped on Latin nouns and how the endings determine the subject/object, singular/plural form.

In Art, the children have continued with their typography lessons and have designed their own shapes that will be cut from black sugar paper and then rearranged to form their initials.

Congratulations to our Superstar certificate recipients: Maisie (5H) and Billy (5W)

Have a safe and enjoyable sunny weekend.

The Year 5 Team.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
