Year 5 BLOG 22.11.24

Date: 22nd Nov 2024 @ 4:08pm

Welcome to our Y5 Blog…..

On Monday, the assembly team from church led whole school worship. With the help from some of our pupils, they re-enacted the story of the unforgiving servant focusing on the message: “We must forgive others their sin against us if we want our sins against God to be forgiven.

Our topic surrounding our Solar System has continued to blast through the Milky Way! We investigated how we have Night and Day, using balls and torches as well as how our Moon changes shape throughout its Lunar month.

In Geography and on the theme of the Earth, we learnt about lines of latitude and longitude, remembering which is which through a song based on the ‘wheels on the bus…’ From this, we looked at how the Earth is split into the N,S, E & W hemisphere using coordinates. Using this knowledge, we then located countries using only coordinates. Try this one… Which country has the coordinates 40 degrees North and 140 degrees East???

In maths, we completed our topic on multiplication and division and next week will be moving on to reading tables and line graphs. We worked really hard on the method of long division, yet short division was voted the most popular method, especially when the divisor is a single digit number.

In English, we have concluded are ‘Mars Transmission’ build up work and next week, we will be planning and writing our own version of being stranded in an isolated place.

During guided reading, we were excited to learn about the 3rd person involved in the Apollo 11 Moon landing of 1969 – Michael Collins. We were aware of Neil and Buzz, who walked on the Moon, but didn’t realise the importance of Michael, who was effectively their taxi driver. He collected them, once they had taken off from the Moon, and brought them safely home.

To end the week, we came together as a school for our weekly Celebration assembly. As a treat, the school choir got us feeling all festive by singing three of the songs they sang at last night’s Christmas tree light switch on in Formby village.

Congratulations to our Weekly Superstars : Jacob (5W) and Nina (5H).

Have a safe, restful and wonderful weekend, everybody.

The Year 5 Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
