Year 5 Blog 27.9.24

Date: 27th Sep 2024 @ 2:44pm

Welcome to our Year 5 Blog.

In English, the children planned and wrote their own ‘cute’ animal themed poem following the ABAB rhyming pattern. They remembered to include modal verbs, rhyming couplets, superlatives and alliteration and the poems that they created were exceptional!

During PSHE, the children learnt about the concept of marriage. They looked at the different types of weddings and how the rules have changed over time.

In guided reading we further extended our Maya knowledge and learnt all about the ancient Maya game of Pokatok. The children were quite shocked at what happened to the losing team’s captain!

In maths, the children completed a review task on Chapter 1 and began Chapter 2’s topic all about addition of numbers up to 1000000. They also learnt quick maths such as how to add 99+99+99+99+99 quickly in their heads.

In computing, we continued our unit on ‘systems and searching’ and the children were introduced to a variety of search engines and investigated what results each one would generate. They also learnt how to narrow a search down to key words to ensure that the correct search results.

In PE, the children had a one-off strength, balance and flexibility lesson and did really well when holding their yoga poses.

In games, the children continued with their offensive skills when travelling past an opponent. They also practised zonal and man to man marking and discussed the pros and cons of both. We have seen a huge improvement in their skills when transferred into small sided games.

In topic, we looked at different maps of Chichen Itza (spotting similarities and differences) and then examined important features and their significance to daily life.

In Latin we continued learning about Latin nouns and how the endings determine the subject/object, singular/plural form. The children were then able to translate an English sentence with a subject, verb, object into Latin, remembering the correct word endings to use.

In Art, the children have continued with their typography lessons and designed their own shapes that they cut from black sugar paper before rearranging them to form their initials.

Congratulations to our Superstar certificate recipients: Zefan and Layla (5H) and Isaac (5W)

Have a safe and enjoyable ‘sunny’ (fingers crossed) weekend.

The Year 5 Team. J

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
