Year 5 Blog 4.1.0.24

Date: 4th Oct 2024 @ 4:49pm

Welcome to our Year 5 Blog.

In English, we have begun instructional writing and are using the ancient Maya ball game – Pok-a-tok to build up a set of instructions in how to play it. As part of our experience activities, the children practised and played the game. They found it extremely tricky as they couldn’t touch the ball with their hands, head or feet.

In guided reading the children recapped what they had already learnt about Maya numbers and were introduced to the Maya’s as amazing astronomers.

In maths, the children recapped subtracting using renaming, but using numbers within 100000. We looked at calculations that required lots of renaming and the children were reminded to estimate the answer by rounding and checking the answer by adding the answer to the number they were taking away to see if it matched the number they were taking away from! They were also shown a trick when subtracting from multiples of 100 without the need to do any renaming.

e.g 5000 – 3647 =

Take away 1 from the 5000 to make 4999 but remember to add the 1 back on at the end!

4999-3647 = 1352 + 1  = 1353

In computing, we continued our unit on ‘systems and searching’ and the children learnt about web crawlers that are constantly checking web pages and indexing the words so they when that word is searched for, the search engine will be able to  locate it in the index (just like a book). They also learnt how to narrow a search down by being clear with what they are searching for and putting this in inverted commas.

In PE, the children were back to their regular dance lessons. They were able to successfully convert actions into travelling movements thinking about pathways, direction and level.

In games, the children practised their shooting skills and then put these to good use during small sided games.

In Latin, the children translated a selection of words within the story of Queen Boudicca using their knowledge of noun and verb endings.

In Art, the children have continued with their typography lessons. This week they practised using charcoal and 2B pencils to draw bold and strong pictures onto maps of Formby to build up their drawing confidence.

Good luck to all our Year 5 pupils who will be auditioning for Art Stars on Monday.

Congratulations to our Superstar certificate recipients: Anna and Tom (5H) and Alex (5W)

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend everyone.

The Year 5 Team.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
