Year 5 Blog 7.6.24

Date: 7th Jun 2024 @ 6:19pm

The three day week, was a great way for the children to settle back in to the swing of things for the final half term of their Y5 journey.

In Maths , we continued studying measurement and converting between different units. We also explored imperial and metric units of measure. Did you know the top half of your thumb is approximately 1 inch in length?

In Science, we have begun our reproduction of plants topic. This week we have learnt about the parts and functions of a flowering plant , and used the orienteering course during our learning journey. We also learnt about wind and insect pollination and how important our insects are to crop production. 85% of all crops rely on insect pollination to reproduce and of this, 80% of the insects are bees. This is worth £15 billion pounds per year and the insects don't receive a penny!

During PSHE, we looked at ciitizenship and the rule of law and are looking forwards to our mock trial next week.

We also discussed the 'SMILE' challenge and how we can best spend the money we are going to be given to make people in our community smile. There were lots of great ideas ands we are looking forward to bringing some of these ideas to reality.

This afternoon, we got together with our Y1 buddies and had a fun time playing board games and then playing out in the sunshine.

Next week, we will be beginning our writing topic based on the short film called the Piano. This is always an emotive topic, but one whereby the children fully engage with and thoroughly enjoy. As it is based around memories of the past , which includes on about the war, this will allow us to discuss the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings and the significance of this event.

Enjoy your weekend . Keep safe and well.

The Y5 Team.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
