Good afternoon and welcome back to the last half term of the year!
After an extended half term break, we hit the ground running with the start of our 'Circle of Life' topic. We started by recapping the parts of a flower and then using our orienteering course set out to look for the function of each flower part. This was a fun way to learn outdoors especially as the weather is so glorious. We also, disected some tulips that Tesco very kindly allowed us to have for free so we could look at the reproductive parts in greater detail. This got the class talking and asking some really relevant questions such as, "Can a bee take pollen from a tulip and transfer it to the stigma of a differnt species of plant to create a new species?" We learnt how important the honey bee is for pollinating 85% of the world's crops. Did you know that the annoying midge pollinates the cocoa plant which is where chocolate comes from ! Next week we will be looking at how plants can produced new plants all by themselves (asexual reproduction), using spring onions which once again have come free courtesy of Tesco.
In Maths we, compiled all our survey data from York and using the mean average, constructed our own bar graphs comparing traffic in both Formby and York. York was by far the busier of the two locations with many more people cycling than in Formby. Come on Formby, get on your bikes!
As part of our DT topic, we are studying "pop up books" and this week we investigated a range of mechanical techniques. We have been practising a range of techniques including: the box fold, the slider and the fixed/loose pivot lever. The York photos are now ready for next week when we will be designing our own pop up scrapbook of our York residential. What a crafty time we will all have next week. As well as this, our Art's week kicks off in style on Thursday and runs through to the following Wednesday.
Have a safe and enjoyable weekend and remember: hats, suncream and plenty of water.
Have fun,
~The Year 5 team.
