Year 5 Weekly Blog 3.3.23

Date: 3rd Mar 2023 @ 2:15pm

A shorter week but an action packed one!

Mrs Harper, Mrs Platt and Mrs Morris  have once again been extremely busy working with our Star Warts performers and it is certainly taking shape; we definitely have lots of talent in Year 5.... and lots of modal adverbs!

The afterschool 'props' cl;ub began on Thursday and the children enjoyed getting involved in taking ownership of the production and should feel proud of their creations.

In maths, we completed our deimal fraction topic and are commencing our brief yet important lessons on percentages.

In english, we looked at the Listeners poem in greater detail and created adventerous word banks which will be extremely useful when we plan and write our own piece next week which will really showase our writing skillls.

In PE, 5W wowed Mr Williams with their swimming skills and technique, in the session what they missed in Autumn term.

Once again, we hosted our Y13 friends who have been delivering PE sessions to 5W as part of their A level Sports Science qualificatiion.

We are all improving week on week with our handball skills and are looking forwards to playing some intra year group matches at the end of the half term.

In science, we have focussed on Chemistry - changing and separating materials. We have enjoyed predicting and carrrying out fair tests to find out which materials are soluble and which were insoluble. We also observed chemical reactions such as mixing lemon juice with bicarbonate of soda , yeast with a solution of water & sugar,  plaster of paris and water, and finally vitamin c tablets with vinegar, which created quite an explosion! It did take quite a few failed attempts in 5W but they got there in the end!

In computing, we continued with our Scratch programming and have wowed ourselves and our teachers with our creative programming skills which resulted in some wonderful space themed tunes to go alongside the first scene of our production.

Finally World Book Day was a great success and the children and adults in school made a real effort to bring it alive. it is lovely to see how the love of books runs through our school. We even learnt that Mr 'Gary's ' favourite book is Bob the Builder!

Enjoy your weekend and stay safe,

From all of us in Year 5.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
