Year 6 Blog 17.1.25

Date: 17th Jan 2025 @ 2:22pm

We are not fully back in the swing of Year 6 and have continued our very positive start to 2025 this week. The children have composed their initial drafts of a diary from the perspective of a Darwin-like naturalist who has made a fascinating discovery on an island of their creation. Be sure to ask them which giant creature they have discovered and what makes it unique.

In maths, we have moved on from fractions and have progressed through some brand-new learning for the children – ratio. This is a tricky subject but all staff have been impressed by how the children have linked this to their prior learning on fractions and their equivalents. We have moved onto problem-solving with ratio and this has been an appropriate challenge for Year 6.

In PE, dodgeball and hockey have been the order of play for this week and will continue to be so for the remainder of the half-term. With better weather, we have been lucky enough to get outside and rehearse previously learned hockey skills and dribbling techniques. In DT, we have come up with some initial ideas about what to include in our miniature playgrounds. The children have been tasked with designing their own playground, with a view to making a smaller scale model of their ideas. Please support your child in keeping their eyes peeled for any useful materials at home which may be recycled and incorporated into their models over the coming weeks.

As a reminder, we have started giving out punctuation and grammar home-learning on the reverse of the maths home-learning. This is to encourage a greater take-up as some children weren’t accessing the set tasks on Doodle – this facility is still available though to any families who want to further extend their child’s learning in an open-ended way.

Have a great weekend and rest up.

The Year 6 team.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
