Secret Storyteller
At St. Luke's, we know how important reading is to children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), and we share the joy of reading for pleasure every day. The Development Matters framework (non-statutory) highlights that children in Reception will be learning to engage in storytimes. To help foster this love of reading, we are excited to introduce the 'Secret Storyteller'!
We know that parents/ carers who read one picture book with their child every day will expose their child to approximately 78,000 different words each year. From birth to Reception those children will have been exposed to 1.4 million more words than children who are not exposed to books.
The idea behind this is that a 'Secret Storyteller' will sneak into school and read a story to either Pinewoods or Sand Dunes class, without letting the child they are linked to know! We would love to invite parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, or any family members to come into school and read a story to the class. We will also be extending the invitation to members of staff within school and our local community (police officers/ nurses/ vets etc). The choice of book is up to you – it could be one from your own childhood or your child’s current favourite.
If you would like to become a "Secret Storyteller", please speak to a member of the Reception Team or email us at [email protected]. We plan to arrange these readings on Friday afternoons. Our first Secret Storyteller will be a wonderful grandparent who is also an author!
Thank you for helping us make reading a special experience for our children.
